In 2010, China’s applications for trademark registration exceeded 1 million for the first time, ranking the first in the world for 9 consecutive years. In the first half of this year, applications for trademark registration in China increased by 34.84% compared to the same period of last year, and a new record for the whole year can be expected.
In 2010, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) examined 1.48 million applications for trademark registration, overfilling the task of 1.4 million of the whole year, and thus effectively solved the widespread concerned backlog of trademark examinations in China. The examination cycle of trademark is shortened within 12 months from the previous 36 months. Up to June 2011, 1173 trademarks of geographical indications in total had been registered in SAIC. In 2010, the number of trademark applications for international registration from China increased by 42%, taking 4.9% of global amount, ranking from the eighth to the seventh and holding the top 10 for seven straight years with the rate of increase even listing the second of the world.
